PUMPED STORAGE HYDRO
A FLEXIBLE, DYNAMIC WAY TO STORE AND DELIVER RENEWABLE ENERGY
As we continue to integrate significant amounts of renewable energy into the grid, we have to solve the energy storage problem in a big way.
Enter pumped storage hydropower, the best-established and most economical form of bulk energy storage available today. rPlus Energies is working to expand pumped storage hydropower's contribution to grid resilience and reliability.
An efficient and clean way to store and deliver large quantities of energy, pumped storage hydro plants store energy and generate power by moving water between two reservoirs at different elevations. Over and over again.
Pumped storage hydropower provides energy-balancing, stability, and long-duration storage capacity, along with critical ancillary grid services such as network frequency control and reserves.
Once built, pumped storage hydro plants have an unmatched operational life-span of more than 75 years. While pumped storage has been in use for nearly a century, almost no pumped storage hydro plants have yet reached retirement. As utilities continue to move away from fossil fuels, pumped storage hydropower has the ability to store and deliver renewable energy to the grid for the next century.
These projects will bring substantial economic benefits to the local communities and will serve as an important element of the region’s modernized and reliable energy infrastructure.
The projects are being developed by rPlus Hydro, LLP, a partnership formed by rPlus Energies with Gridflex Energy, the leading originator of new pumped storage hydropower in the United States.
rPlus Hydro is developing several large scale pumped storage projects around the United States. All but one are closed–loop. With up to ten hours of full-capacity storage, the plants can provide power during peak load periods across multiple days-far longer than batteries.

THE MODERN ENERGY HUB FOR WYOMING WIND ENERGY
THE MODERN ENERGY HUB FOR WYOMING WIND ENERGY
The Seminoe Pumped Storage Project is a 900 megawatt pumped hydro energy storage project being developed in Carbon County, Wyoming. This type of system shifts water between an upper reservoir and a lower reservoir to store energy and generate power when needed. In this case, the lower reservoir will be the existing Seminoe Reservoir, an open-loop system. The project will bring substantial economic benefits to the local community and will serve as an important element of Wyoming’s modernized and reliable energy infrastructure. This Final License Application was submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on January 18, 2023.

THE MODERN ENERGY HUB OF THE BASIN AND RANGE
The White Pine Pumped Storage Project is a 1,000 megawatt energy storage project being developed in White Pine County, Nevada. White Pine Pumped Storage represents nearly 1/8th of Nevada’s peak power demand on a hot summer day and represents more than a two billion dollar investment in Nevada’s clean energy infrastructure. This will be Nevada's first pumped storage hydroelectric project. The Final License Application was submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on February 24, 2023.
